They are all decorated with cushion capitals as well as carvings with biblical motifs and mythical beasts. The Urnes Stave Church (ca 1050) is the oldest of its kind in Norway. Between the 11th and 14th century about 1200 Stav-churches arose in Scandinavia. The Vikings were being christianized at that time, but also held on to their own beliefs. In this their ships played a central role, and so they constructed their churches as if they were ships. Urnes church is a fully developed three-aisled stave structure with a total of 14 staves supporting the central aisle. The majority of the staves are placed on ground beams.

Urnes Stave Church (Norwegian: Urnes stavkyrkje) is a 12th-century stave church at Ornes, along the Lustrafjorden in the municipality of Luster in Vestland county, Norway. The church sits on the eastern side of the fjord, directly across the fjord from the village of Solvorn and about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) east of the village of Hafslo. Urnes Stave Church – Norway’s oldest and most highly decorated stave church. Three churches have preceded todays church at Ornes. A hundred years would pass between the first and the fourth, the one we can visit today dates to around 1130.
